Apple Pie and Fall Colors in Oak Glen
Blog readers, like you, turned me on to apple picking in Oak Glen in 2010 (see post from back then). Since then, everyone has posts on apple picking! The thing I hear over and over again from adults is that it’s an outing they still remember from their childhood. My 8 year old daughter pushed our 2013 trip. We’ve been disappointed in the past when Los Rios Rancho runs out of their U-Pick apples, which takes away from the experience of going to the orchard. However, my daughter said:“But we go every year. We have to walk the trail.“How can we argue with that? So each year we just try to downplay the apple-picking itself — and add something new and different to the trip, ever-expanding our knowledge of the quaint little loop and the businesses along the way.I remembered my blogger friend, Josh, wrote about his trip to Oak Glen in 2012. The crazy 5 lb. apple pie from Apple Annie’s Bakeshop in his post caught my attention, so we had to check it out.We had a choice of grabbing a full sit-down breakfast or getting a few pastries from the Bakeshop. We chose the latter and sat in the bakery eating area under an old oak. The morning was crisp and there were fall colors. We arrived about 9am, so it wasn’t too busy yet. We viewed all the shops from our seating area and even spotted some peacocks on the roof of one of the storefronts! We headed over to Riley’s at Los Rios Rancho right away because we know parking can get crazy there as the day progresses. We always park to the right near The Wildlands Conservancy. The upper lot was already full so we made our way down to the picnic area parking lot. The Children’s Nature Trail hike is a loop hike and we usually end in the picnic area parking lot. This time we started our hike there and walked the trail “backwards!”Immediately, we were kicking through fall leaves and walking down the hill to play in the shade of the stream:We always discover something new on this hike! Like this spooky tree:Or the layering of the mountains in the distance:Or the new Southern California Montane Botanic Garden and its metalwork signs:But there’s something comforting in the views that remain the same every year.Even as our children grow and experience these views differently with each annual visit. The place was a madhouse by the time we returned to store a little before noon. We bought a bag of our favorite Winesap apples and scooted out of town and off to our next Wildlands adventure at Whitewater Preserve.Explore the rest of Oak Glen:Oak Glen Preserve Children’s Nature Trail – The Wildlands ConservancyMontane Botanic Garden and Children’s Outdoor Discovery CenterRiley’s at Los Rios Rancho Apple Farm Trip: Celebrating Fall with FamilyOriginally posted in October 2013.The post Apple Pie and Fall Colors in Oak Glen appeared first on Fun Orange County Parks.

Best Outdoor Fall Family Traditions in OC 2024
October is my favorite month for families in Orange County! I made my picks of the best outdoor fall family traditions in OC based on the family outdoor experience and if it’s low or no-cost.Wait! Almost forgot. Before you read any further, think about your fall. Think about how you want to spend your time. If you want to snuggle at home with a cup of soup and a good book, that’s okay!If you want to be out under the trees with the leaves falling all around – you don’t necessarily need the excuse of an event. Just find a park and hang out. The kids will love it.Better yet – come up with your own family fall tradition:a pilgrimage to a special far away restaurantan overnight stay at a certain favorite hotel or AirBnBmaking sandcastles on an empty beachcooking a family recipe togetherattending a local community event or festivalIt doesn’t have to be a big deal at a crowded place to be special! If you want a day-by-day list of ideas, check out my 31 Days of October Play Plan post which has specific things for your family to do each day (a lot of them easy and at home). It even has a printable calendar and list.Make sure you pay attention to the weather and check all the OFFICIAL details for fees and suggested ages. Click on the bold green titles to link to official information.Outdoor Fall Family Events in Orange CountyKID-FRIENDLY SEPTEMBER & OCTOBERU-Pick Pumpkin Patch at Tanaka Farms in Irvine is perfect if you want to visit the farm and support our local farmers. The Hana Field Pumpkin Patch & Flower Field in Costa Mesa is a smaller and more relaxed experience only open on weekends starting October 5th. (They usually have U-Pick sunflowers, but unfortunately something ate the seeds this year).Irvine Park Railroad Pumpkin Patch. Open from September 14th through October 31st. (It’s free if you just wander around the patch.)Apple Picking at Oak Glen* — I, personally, like to wait until it’s COLD (like, in the 40s in the morning when we arrive!). It may mean there are no apples left to pick, but that’s okay with me. Make sure you hike the Children’s Nature Trail and visit the Montane Botanic Garden.*Not OC, but as my daughter reminded me — it’s tradition so we have to go!Remember, you don’t have to wait for someone else to plan fall fun! You can always take your kids outside to play anywhere in this beautiful weather (even if it’s just the front yard!).Fall events on the 1st weekend in October23rd Annual Irvine Global Village Festival(FREE Event) is from 10am to 6pm on Saturday, October 5th at Great Park. It’s celebrating its 23rd anniversary and there is plenty for families and your kids to experience. Our family clears our schedule every year for this favorite of fall traditions and we have so many fond memories of the people we’ve met and the stories they’ve shared with us. Check the entertainment schedule (will be updated closer to the event date) and event map showing the Kids Village and more.U-Pick Pumpkins at UC South Coast Research & Extension CenterThis doesn’t happen every year, but be on the lookout for this fun and not crowded opportunity by following the @ucsouthcoast account on Instagram for potential U-Pick. It happened in 2023 on the 1st weekend in October.Fall activities starting the 2nd weekend in OctoberFall-O-Ween at Heritage Hill Historic Park – October 11-13 & 18-20, 4:30-8:30 PM(FREE Event & FREE Parking) for 2 weekends October. Be sure to bring your cameras! See the official flyer for all the official information!Special Note: This event has become more and more popular over the years and for 2024 you might expect long lines. 2024 Pumpkin Patch at Irvine Park Railroad
2024 Pumpkin Patch at Irvine Park Railroad is a family tradition at Irvine Regional Park. Our family tries to visit every year. We always take the kids photo next to the pumpkin ruler to see how tall they’ve grown.HINT: Best time of day to visit is about 2 hours before closing. The light is so pretty then! Just make sure you get on the train and the hay ride first, so you don’t run out of time. Go EARLY in the day if you’d rather beat the crowds and have easier parking.Photos in this post may be from past years, since we’ve been going so long! Check out the @irvineparkrailroad Instagram account for current photos of 2024.You do have to pay $3-$5 for parking at Irvine Regional Park, but you do NOT have to pay to get into the Pumpkin Patch. You can easily spend the entire day at Irvine Regional Park by adding a trip to the Orange County Zoo ($2 per person) and putting in some good playground and nature time. Their are 4 playgrounds here! Try them all. The bike and paddle boat rentals can add even more fun to your day outdoors. Grabbing some lunch or dinner at the kid-friendly snack stand next to the train station ticket booth or packing a picnic means there’s no reason to rush your time spent here.FREE activities include:Haunted HouseHay MazeTake your own fall photos of the kids near pumpkins or at the painted picture stands (where you peek your head through a mural)Walk through Irvine Regional Park on a fall day where you can see peacocks, horses, ducks, and even a flock of wild green parrots if you’re luckyTICKET activities requiring purchased tickets include:One TicketTrain Ride (one ticket)Hay Ride (one ticket) – my husband LOVED thisGone Fishing (one ticket) – everyone wins a prizeMoon Bounce (one ticket) – 10 minutes of jump timeJohn Deere Tractor Racers for 5-8 year olds (one ticket)Bank-a-Ball (one ticket)Carnival Games (one ticket for two games – and everyone wins a prize)Cookie Decorating (one ticket – and they are BIG cookies!)Bank-A-Ball (one ticket)Two TicketsPumpkin Ring Toss (one ticket for small prize, two tickets for large prize – everyone wins a prize)Pumpkin Decorating (two tickets)Panning for Gold (two tickets)Face Painting (two tickets)Mini Diggers (two tickets – for ages 5 and older)Tickets are $8.00 each or you can save $15.00 by purchasing a book of 15 tickets for $100.00. 2019 was the first year they raised the prices in 10 years. Prices were stable in 2022 and 2023. This year they are up $1 per activity ticket from $7 last year to $8 this year (from $90 for the ticket book to $100). They do have a flash sale for the book of tickets from time to time — so look for that next year if you missed it this year. Children 12 months old and younger do not require a ticket for the train or hay ride.Check out the price guide as you head into the patch for an idea of pumpkin pricing. The pumpkins are clustered together around the trees and along the fences, making for great photo opportunities.ChecklistParking at Irvine Regional Park is $3 on weekdays and $5 on weekends — and $7 on holidays. Entrance to the pumpkin patch is free. Arrive early in the day for a more convenient parking space and a shorter line for the ever-popular train ride. Their website warns: “As Halloween nears, we encourage visitors to plan to arrive early to help avoid crowds, particularly on the weekend.”When there is no parking left in the park, the entrance to the park can and will close. They’ve started with an off-site auxiliary parking lot (but if it’s THAT busy then I’d skip it! Honestly.).Irvine Park Railroad’s Pumpkin Patch will be open daily from September 14th through Halloween. On weekdays, they open at 10:00 and close at 6:00pm. On weekends, they open earlier at 8:00am (go then!) and close at 6:00pm.Visit Irvine Park Railroad’s Pumpkin Patch page for coupons and more information.Visit my post for info on playgrounds or go to the official Irvine Regional Park online for official information about the park itself.Disclosure: My family has received complimentary tickets to past pumpkin patch experiences during media previews in past years — but not 2024. Irvine Park Railroad never requests or requires that I state any particular point of view. Victory Park in Tustin: An Outdoor Tribute to El Toro Air Station History
Victory Park in Tustin makes you feel like you are playing on the grounds of a Marine Corps Air Station. Wait. You are!Directions to Victory Park in Tustin: The park is right off Jamboree near The District in Tustin. If you are coming from I-5, you take the Warner / Park Avenue exit off Jamboree. Turn right at the stop and the park is ahead of you on your left. Another easy way to get to the park, while getting a close-up view of the original full-size hangars is to take Barranca to Tustin Ranch Road and turn on Victory Road. (Address: 3300 Park Avenue, Tustin) MAP TO VICTORY PARK IN TUSTINHighlights:Every detail of the park keeps the air station alive — from the hangar-shaped restroom building & covered picnic area to the mini flight control tower replica with photos of the helicopters that flew here. The garden area has landing strip details and the benches are shaped like airplane wings sitting on top of a hangar-shaped base. There are 6 placards sharing incredible details and historical photography of the old base.Lots of climbing apparatus with different size handholds that would be fun, even for older kids.Grassy hill with a spiral path leading down into the playground – at the top is blue-filtered telescope and a red-filtered binocular that you can set into the distance.Interactive play panels with drums and music, plus an oddly placed post office doorway that leads into a wall. You’ll find plenty of futuristic monkey bars and “spiderweb” climbers, as well as spinners and balancing pedestals. There is an accessible ramp for wheelchair access to some of the playground features, but the play surface is wood chips. There is a nice sidewalk around the park for walking or scooters. There are 6 bench swings and 4 baby swings.Be Aware:It’s a BIG playground and you’ll probably have to follow your little one to be able to see him/her in all the places they can go. The good news is that the equipment is big enough to hold adults. The tallest tunnel slide is only reachable by a ladder – and it’s steep. Test it out yourself first! Not much shade on the play areaChecklist:If you want to make this a Play Trip, check out my post on Things to Do Near Mess Hall Market in TustinDedicated parking lotRecycled rubber and bark play surface with lots of lawn areas and some decomposed granite pathwaysNice new restroom buildingDrinking fountainSome benches, but they don’t really provide a great view of the playgroundCovered picnic area with 4 tables and 2 charcoal grillsFour more picnic tables outside the cover, surrounding the grassy area near the parking lot. Pavion Park in Mission Viejo
Pavion Park in Mission Viejo existed for a long time before it opened with a completely new playground in December 2014 — designed to be a universally accessible playground and one of the most progressive playgrounds I’ve ever seen. When I first visited this park back in 2010, it was our “mystery destination” on a walk up the Oso Creek Trail through the Jeronimo Open Space from Oso Viejo Park near the Norman P. Murray Senior Center. I had my two kids and two nephews with me (ages 4-8) and embarked toward Pavion thinking it would be a quick jaunt, but it turns out it’s a 1.8 mile hike uphill on a paved trail. Directions to Pavion Park in Mission Viejo: Pavion is near the corner of Jeronimo and Olympiad. There are multiple directions to approach this park. From Interstate 5, it may be easiest to exit Alicia Parkway and travel east towards the foothills. Drive quite a ways up the hill and turn right onto Jeronimo. Drive all the way up Jeronimo until it almost hits Olympiad. Turn right at Pavion. Park along the street. [Address: 24051 Pavion, Mission Viejo] MAP TO PAVION PARK IN MISSION VIEJOHighlights:It’s universally accessible! They integrated a little natural history with interpretive signs about animals that are (or were once) native to the area.Colorful adirondack chairs grouped for socializing. There’s a path just past the Oso Creek Trail leading between this park and Oso Viejo Park which cuts through the Jeronimo Open Space. It was a beautiful walk. (Uphill from Oso Viejo to here / Downhill from here to Oso Viejo). Two bench swings, two baby swings, two “swing with me” swings where you can swing face-to-face in tandem with your baby or toddler. If you like these, I have a whole list of parks with Mommy and Me baby swings.Fun dance game that gets kids really active. (Not functioning well at the moment – September 2024.)I counted 15 spinners — all different kinds! Usually kids are waiting to take turns, but you can have tons of kids all spinning away at the same time.New and different zip line! Have you ever seen a zip line swing like this?A big colorful maze on the ground with game instructions (or make up your own). It’s a super large playground with multiple play areas laid out on a flat surface.Shade trees surrounding the playground on the lawn area. The main playground is completely accessible with ramps and interactive boards – and a tree house slide that some can reach by climbing leaf ladders.Only a small sand area for the diggers. It has a rocking boat that fits a wheelchair.Be Aware:There is an elementary school nearby so traffic and parking could be bad at school drop-off and pick up.It’s a popular park on weekends. The park is now almost a decade old and it is lacking some of the luster pictured in my opening photo! There are some sizable craters in the recycled rubber surfacing now (mostly under swings where it gets a lot of wear & tear. (The smaller black spots pictured below are animal tracks for an activity at the park where you find the animal. It’s the bigger spots that I’m illustrating here.)Checklist:Parking along the streetRecycled rubber play surface with a small sand areaRestroom building installed just steps away from the playground in Summer 2016Drinking fountainLots of mesh metal picnic tables and seating areas surrounding the playgroundShade trees for picnics on the lawnFor reservations and information – consult the City of Mission Viejo’s Picnic Shelter pageOfficial City of Mission Viejo Pavion Park pageNearest public library: Mission Viejo Library (not part of OCPL)My list of Universally Accessible Playgrounds in Orange CountyVisit my South Orange County Parks index to find more playgroundsPre-2014 Photo Archive of Pavion Park!It used to look A LOT different!Originally posted in August 2010.The post Pavion Park in Mission Viejo appeared first on Fun Orange County Parks.
Courtney’s SandCastle Universal Playground & Sensory Garden in San Clemente
Courtney’s SandCastle Universal Playground in San Clemente is part of the Vista Hermosa Aquatics Center and Sports Park. It’s a beautiful accessible playground where children of all abilities can play together. It was built in two phases as the fundraising efforts of Courtney’s Sandcastle Foundation made each phase possible. Phase I was the playground and Phase II brought in the sensory garden including water features. How to Get to Courtney’s SandCastle in San Clemente: Take Interstate 5 and exit at Avenida Vista Hermosa – turn towards the foothills and away from the ocean. The park is obvious with white adobe-like walls across from a massive Target store. Address: 987 Vista Hermosa, San Clemente. MAP TO COURTNEY’S SANDCASTLE IN SAN CLEMENTEHighlights:I love that all kids can play together with no child feeling left out. The entire playground is ramped and navigable by wheelchair — even up on the playground equipment! Many of my friends will appreciate that the playground is entirely fenced, but it’s so big that you don’t even notice that it’s fenced off. There’s a restroom building right inside the fence. You can catch shade under the picnic shelter and lots of parents were even sitting in the shade underneath the raised ramps of the playground.Whimsical feel with a pirate ship and castle play equipment. Lots of details, like interactive sensory boards and pedestals for jumping and balance. My son loved climbing the big rock at the back of the playground. The sand pit has diggers, a climb-on sea monster, and a sensory station.Special accessible swings, bench swings and baby swings. The sensory garden and water features are amazing — opened March 2015 (see photos below)!Be Aware:Best time to beat the crowd: When it’s recreational swim at the pool (everyone is at the pool)! Busiest time to visit: Right after rec swim lets out!Parking lot is shared by the sports park, so it can get busy on game days.Watch where the sand gets scattered on the sidewalk — it’s slippery. I saw a little boy almost do the splits because he slide on the sand wearing his flip-flops.Ground can get hot on hot days – so make sure little ones keep their shoes on. Not much shade on the playground, but there is a central covered picnic area where parents can sit to watch the kids.Checklist:Dedicated free parking lot with plenty of spacesPlay surface is recycled rubber with a separate sand boxRestrooms at the playgroundPicnic tables under shade coverLink to the official Courtney’s SandCastle Foundation website with information on park rules and how to reserve for birthday partiesRead more about the Vista Hermosa Aquatic Center and Sports ParkLink to the official City of San Clemente page for Courtney’s SandCastleVisit my list of 15 Pirate Parks in Orange County for more pretend play opportunities!More parks with universally accessible features in Orange County:My FULL LIST of Universally Accessible Playgrounds in Orange CountyAll-Inclusive Beach Playground in Huntington BeachBox Canyon Park in Yorba LindaCherry Park in Lake ForestAngel’s Playground in TeWinkle Park in Costa MesaHeritage Park in Irvine (accessible features)Northwood Community Park in Irvine (accessible features)Universally Accessible Playground at Fountain Valley Sports ParkCourtney’s SandCastle Sensory Garden and Water FeaturesThis garden and water features is the result of work by a huge community of supporters. 3 Spots for OC Beach and Ocean Sunsets
Orange County beach and ocean sunsets are the perfect ending to our days playing outdoors. We’ve lived away from the beach – up in the mountains of Colorado or in the Piedmont of North Carolina – so I especially appreciate the opportunity to see the waves crashing as the sun sets behind Catalina Island. We see an ocean sunset at least once a week and strive for more. My son’s New Year’s resolution one year was to “Watch more sunsets.”There are many, many places to see amazing sunsets. I’ll probably suggest more as time goes by, but here are a few beautiful spots to get you started:Inspiration Point in Corona Del Mar: This was our “go to” spot during college at UCI. We’d park on Ocean Blvd. off Marguerite above the beach. Watch the sunset anywhere from here. Benches line the sidewalk running along the bluff. We walk down to the beach and do a loop on the sand before coming up the ramp on the south end of the beach. Stop at the mid-point of the ramp up to Inspiration Point and that would be my pick of a great beach sunset viewing spot! (Don’t forget to look down into the rocks – the kids will get a special thrill at the statue surprise below!)Strand Vista overlook in Dana Point: It’s off Selva in Dana Point near the housing development on the Dana Point headlands. Again, you can do a lovely walk down the stairs near the funicular, wind your way around the beach walkway to the south, and head up the winding pathway for even more views.Browns’ Park in Laguna Beach: There’s a teensy-tiny little gem in Laguna Beach. Browns’ Park is one of my favorite spots on Earth (even though I’ve only been once). Walk up the hill toward the Wyland Gallery from the Main Beach Playground. You’ll pass Wyland and I believe this spot is right past the Aviation Art Gallery. You’ll find a skinny little park. I’m not going to give you details, because the discovery is half the fun! Just walk out to the end of the park and take in the view.“Browns’ Park – A LegacyLet me live in house by the side of the sea,Where men and women wander byWhere there’s beauty and grace and excitement that’s freeOn the beach in the sun let me lie.Let me listen to the ocean’s melodious roarAnd its rhythm, so soothing to hearAs the foam covered waves seem to reach for the shoreUnder skies that are sunny and clear.”-Joseph E. BrownHave fun and play often! And, of course, enjoy a few sunsets . . .Originally posted in May 2010.The post 3 Spots for OC Beach and Ocean Sunsets appeared first on Fun Orange County Parks.
